Fifty years of studing the work of Prof. Çabej in Kosova, 1952-2002
Fifty years before, the passionated researcher Hasan Kaleshi, has published a review for ”Serbo - Croatian – Albanian Dictionary”, co-author of which was Eqrem Çabej. This is the first year a reseacher from Kosova focused the attention of the readers on the name of Professor Çabej, who later, especially during the last thirty years turned to be a synonym of the highest achievements of the science of albanology, and not only of it.
For the work of Prof. Çabej will be writen even later and his studies will be constantly published, especially after 1970, when his first work will be published in Kosova. From then on, until the end of the XX century, his complete works have been published, giving the reason for tens of articles to be written for the reflective aspect, the research aspect and the aspect of evaluating the special and the general contribution of Prof. Çabej in albanology and in the Albanian culture.
Since 1970, when «Për gjenezën e literaturës shqipe» (For the genesis of the Albanian literature) was first published, his research articles will never cease to be published and re-published. so, on 1977, «Rilindja» published his entire work in six volumes, marking one of the greater cultural event in its publications, maybe from the beginning of its activity until today. Only after ten years, it will re-publish them, not only those six volumes, but also the two volumes of the critical edition of «Meshari i Gjon Buzukut», while on 1988-1989 will publish the VIII and IX volumes. Let we bear in mind that the publication of his works was initiated also by the post-graduated students of the Albanian language. The post-graduated discourses «Presentation of the comparative gramatics of Indo-European languages» were recorded, typed and gathered in the form of a brochure, which would be published in the framework of the complete works only on 1986.
The publications of the studies of Prof. Çabej do not appear only in separated books and magazines. Because Prof. Çabej was very active in all scientific sessions of national and international character, in Albania and other research centres of Balkans and Europe, his contribution will be seen also in the joint scientific works published in Prishtina, such as «Fjalori i drejtshkrimit të gjuhës shqipe» (1983), «Kongresi i drejtshkrimit të gjuhës shqipe» (1974), «Drejtshkrimi i gjuhës shqipe» (1978), «Studime ilire» I, II (1978), etc.
Besides his writings in the daily Rilindja and writings on him, the research published in the scientific editions of Tirana, almost imediately, were re-published more than once published in the Prishtina and Shkup literary and scientific reviews: Gjurmime albanologjike, Jehona, Përparimi, Fjala, etc.
Prof. Çabej, as a scientific personality and one of the greater scholars of Albanology and Balkanology, will turn to be an object of study: The Session (IAP, 1998), The Seminar (1987), The Forum (1993), The Commemorative Evening of the Filology Faculty, Prishtina University (1990); and even scientific institutions will be established on his name: The Onomastics Youth Circle «Eqrem Çabej», within the Democratic Youth «Pjetër Bogdani» in Prishtina (1993); and all preparations will be done to found the Albanian Research Institute «Eqrem Çabej» in Prishtina (1998).
As a result of the publication of his studies, his full work and of the scientific gatherings dedicated to his work, time after time will be published also special editions dedicated to the life and his work: Seminari Ndërkombëtar për Gjuhën, Kulturën dhe Letërsinë Shqiptare (1987), Jeta re (1998), Shenjëzat (1998), Eqrem Çabej – Jeta dhe vepra (2002), etc.
In their studies, the general articles, presentations of works on the event of publication, in reviews for books and in the monographical studies, the researchers of Kosova will deal with many domains of knowledge where Prof. Çabej worked during his scientific life. So, with special studies on his life and work, we distinguish: Akad. prof. dr. Idriz Ajeti, Akad. prof. dr. Rexhep Ismajli, Prof. dr. Murat Blaku, Prof. dr. Remzi Nesimi, Mr. Begzad Baliu; reviews for his work: Dr. Hasan Kaleshi, Akad. prof. dr. Idriz Ajeti, Akad. prof. dr. Rexhep Ismajli, Dr. Aanton Berisha, etc; for his mental, intellecual, and scientific personality will write: Akad. prof. dr. Rexhep Qosja, Prof. dr. Shefki Sejdiu etj.; for his contribution in the history of the language: Akad. prof. dr. Idriz Ajeti, Akad. prof. dr. Rexhep Ismajli, etc.; for the theorical problems and the scientific results in etimology: Akad. prof. dr. Idriz Ajeti, Prof. dr. Qemal Murati, etc.; for the scientific values of his studies in onomastics: Akad. prof. dr. Idriz Ajeti, Prof. dr. Ruzhdi Ushaku, Dr. Rexhep Doçi, Dr. Skënder Gashi, Mr. Begzad Baliu etc.; for his results in the historical gramatics I. Ajeti, while for those in the historical phonetics Akad. prof. dr. Rexhep Ismajli, while those of the historical syntax were studied by Mr. Agim Spahiu. In this continuity of studies, approaches and general scientific presentations, the work of Prof. Çabej turned to be an object of study in different scientific fields.
For his contribution in dialectology wrote Prof. dr Latif Mulaku, Prof. dr. Imri Badallaj, etc.; for his contribution in the culture of language Akad. prof. dr. Rexhep Ismajli, Prof. dr. Fadil Raka, Prof. dr. Imri Bajçinca, Prof. dr. Bahtijar Kryeziu, etc. More than in any field, his interests and dedication in literature was analyzed by: Prof. dr. Sabri Hamiti, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, Dr. Emin Kabashi, Prof. dr. Gani Lubeteni, Prof. dr. Zejnullah Rrahmani, Mr. Arben Hoxha etc., and in the field of the popular literature: Dr. Fazli Syla, Dr. Zymer Neziri, Dr. Rrustem Berisha, Dr. Anton Berisha, etc., but also in the field of ethnology: Prof. dr. Drita Statofci, Prof. dr. Ukë Xhema, etc. Prof. Çabej was a multi-disiplinary skilled scholar, so the researchers, apart the interest they had, above all have been obliged to operate through a comparative evaluations of problems. So, it is understandable why his work was not an easy one to be studied in its whole and to be achieved the desired results. All the same, many researchers from Kosova dared to evaluate his knowledge also from this angle. In this direction, M. Halimi wrote for the contribute of Professor Çabej in Balkanistic studies, R. Ismajli (for Çabej and the linguistic schools), Gj. Shehu (for Professor Çabej and the French school Words and things), R. Ushaku (for Professor Çabej and the attacks of the Slavic researcher in the Albanological studies); Prof. dr. Engjëll Sedaj (for Professor Çabej and Fishta); Mr. H. Hoxha (for Baric’s concepts and Professor Çabej); Mr. Begzad Baliu (for Gustav Mayer, Eqrem Çabej and the German school of filology); Mr. Myrvete Dreshaj-Baliu (for Professor Çabej and Naim Frashëri); Prof. dr. Faik Shkodra (for Professor Çabej and De Rada and Naim) etc. The high interest the researchers from Kosova had on Çabej’s work is shown also in the large number of postcards sent to him from Kosova or from other countries of the world, in a time when the correspondence with the researchers of Albania could have severe consequences by the regime: Prof. Hasan Mekuli, Prof. Anton Çetta, Akad. Prof. dr. Rexhep Ismajli, Dr. Ismajl Doda, Haxhi Krasniqi etc.
In contrast with a large number of specific and general studies, the work of Professor Çabej in Kosova still has not been treated in its whole. Until now, his scientific work is dealt with in a monographic level only one time. On 2001, Begzad Baliu finished his postgraduate studies on the topic «Issues of Onomastics’ Studies in Eqrem Çabej’s work».
It is not difficult to deduct that, seeing the actual researches done and the results achieved, more on the work of Prof. Çabej will be written, for many reasons.
His manuscripts continue to be published in Tirana and Prishtina, while the works previously published continue to be re-published. The horizont of expectations in his work has not declined.
In contrary, his work is continually being identified with the highest results achieved in the Albanological studies. For some of the more distinguished achievements, especially in the field of language history and etymology, regardless of many special writtings, still there is no comprehensive monography of these results, while his achievements in studing the works of the old writers, of course, will be unsurpassed models in the Albanological studies. When, someday in the future, his interests in special fields will compose respective monographies, the pretending of a researcher to include all of them in a unique monography can not be called premature.
